The current imbroglio ravaging the Africa’s biggest and largest political party is something of note one must be worried about, like many have been postulating and suggesting that the party size is one of its numerous sources of problems.
Another school of thought posited that PDP is facing instability due to the influence of external forces that does not want it to live and thereby would not want it to provide any reasonable opposition to the current militocracy regime of President Buhari.
If you can keenly gaze, you would also say PDP is facing these troubled waters due to internal power struggles which both the capable and incapable hands want to position themselves for one power position or the other within the party. In my own view, the party is a dynamic but a funny party which I really want to survive at least to be able to provide alternative and credible opposition to the Buhari’s government.
Let me briefly talk about the last two failed National Convention of the party held in Rivers State, the problem of PDP can be views as a self inflicted diseases because from the beginning, let assume ruling party is influencing some things within the party however they did not kick start the problems for PDP.
I want to avoid trading a blame game at this point, Gov Wike, Fayose and Modu Sheriff were strong allies before the storm stroked, and right now Sheriff they brought into power is ensuring that the party remained stagnant not minding if it dies or survive. All effort has been made to make Sheriff shift his stand but has remained adamant, no matter our sentiment we can’t entirely blame him for all of what he is doing. Those power block used Sheriff to betray one of their own, Sheriff have also seen that the same game they used him for is playing out against him so he resolved to fight to the finish not minding the where they all landed but would not go down alone. Would you blame him?
Sheriff has made some demands as conditions for peace before he would give in into whatever both sides would bring to the table. Now, how do PDP reorganize itself let assume Sheriff finally shift his ground and allow the party to do their own thing?
My opinion of things is that the real problem of PDP is leadership crises and unnecessary power tussle, like the popular saying within the party that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not in the grip of any one man unlike the APC where Tinubu and some few other people decides and cut the shot for the rest of party men and women, but that PDP belongs to every member of the party. This assertion gives room to every tom, dick and harry to stand up to say or do anything in the party , the big question now is how can this problem be resolve like it has been managed from the inception of the party?
Since PDP fell out of ASO ROCK, we ordinarily would not expect the party to be run the same way it was running when they have everything available at their disposal. The party now needs to appeal seriously to Nigerians, the party cannot capitalize only on the failure of the current government as the major reason they feel Nigerians will vote for them in 2019? It is certainly far more than that.
Nigerians want to see a new PDP that its mission, Vision and charter are totally different from what was obtainable in the past (Old Order). They want to see new faces that have the ability to turn things around and rebrand the party along the needs and yearning of the people of Nigeria. Nigerians don’t want to see those old people that contributed to the current state of the nation to be same face that’ll be promising a new Nigeria where prosperity will be for every Nigerians.
PDP need a man that is widely acceptable to both the young and old across all walks of life like Pharm. Jimi Agbaje.
Jimi Agbaje is not a sinless man however he will be able to provide a leadership that will not only unite the party but make it very attractive brand for new entrants to fall in love with PDP. It’s no magic hes coming to do but his wealth of experience will greatly impact and improve the general outlook of the party.
Jimi Agbaje on his own is a very loud and shinning brand that PDP can leverage on to give the party a new life, this cannot be done by Jimi Agbaje alone ooo, so that you would not say am over hyping the man. There are other great personalities like Deji Adeyanju and his ilk that can be part of the PDP rescue team if the party will be willing to listen to the voice of reasoning.
Finally, PDP and the current leadership must work very hard by jettisoning personal interest and ensure they put the right people in the right position to revive the already suffocated party from dying in the next convention build to take place in Abuja. PDP is a very strong brand, what it needs to do is to make Nigerians view it new good perception. Truly, PDP can bounce back faster than we all imagine if the right people are allowed to take over the leadership of the party.
